Absolutely brilliant TV theater based on the novel Simulacron 3 by the now forgotten peer of Philip K Dick--Daniel F. Galouye.
Mr. Galouye's tale is that of paranoia and false realities, and both episodes of this West German 1970's production does the concept great justice.
Certain moments are David Lynchian in their brilliance--for example the central character walking on the street and the camera showing a pile of bricks hanging from a crane shadowing his movements from above; or him talking to his boss in the man's office, and starting to thoughtfully swirl in his chair, and the boss also starting to spin on _his_ chair, possibly to show what a good sport he is. The film is full of improbably well-placed nuances like this which enhance the feeling of something creepy and disjointed hiding just below the surface of the film's reality.
And if you ever wondered why the good guys in The Matrix use phones to leave it--it's a nod to this film.
If one expects a stunning adventure with special effects, in spite of this obviously being a 1973 West German TV film, one is not only in for great disappointment, one is also very likely a moron.
If, however, you make your peace with this being a tense, paranoid, mildly psychedelic old-school TV theater, then this will be a very, very pleasant experience.
